The First Appointment

Leading up to our wedding, I was still on Birth Control. Not knowing how my body would respond to being off it after being on for almost 11 years was an unknown I didn't want to deal with before the wedding. Would I gain weight and not fit in my dress that I had just dieted and worked so hard to get down to the best shape of my life? Would I bleed for weeks as friends who had come off told me happened to them? Would I break out? Would I get my period on my wedding day? Those were just things I did not need to worry about and decided to stay on the pill until the day before the wedding.

July 8 was Day 1 of our journey to have a family. We started our process to become parents the day of our wedding. We had a few other wedding events throughout the month of July so we just enjoyed our time and if we got pregnant, that would be the icing on the cake.

After four months ending in another period, I started getting doubtful of what the nurse and doctor told me all those years ago. "It has only been four months, just give it time" everyone would say. But no one knew the full story of what happened in 2007. My husband and I started the conversation to determine if we wanted to meet with a fertility doctor. Ultimately, we wanted to just make sure everything was working and we were capable of doing it on our own.

Around Day 103 we made an appointment at the Fertility Clinic of Illinois to get some initial tests done then move forward from there. This consisted of blood work for both of us, a cycle day 3 basic ultrasound to view the lining of my uterus and see my follicle reserve. My husband had to provide a semen analysis to make sure there were enough swimmers to do the job. We met with Dr. Alvarez to determine what our options would be if we needed to move forward with fertility assistance. After our results came back. we learned that if we were to do any fertility treatments that IUI would not be a successful move for us. We knew I only had 50% of the highways for eggs to travel down but we did not plan for a male factor to be a consideration as well. Dr. Alvarez said IVF would be our best bet for a successful pregnancy.

At the time, we were both on my health insurance with my company. Unfortunately, we did not have any infertility coverage so we were hesitant to move forward considering that everything would then be out of pocket. Thankfully, all of these appointments were classified as basic labs and checkups so they were covered. The doctor put my husband on clomid and we decided to try for a few more months on our own to see if that helped.

Our next step of the journey came on Day 161. Look for the next post to learn what that was!

Until next time...JR
