The Call.

Writer's picture: Julie R.Julie R.

After finding out on Day 626 that I would have to go to Cincinnati for the specialist to do the desensitization, I had to call and schedule an appointment for a consult prior to doing the actual process. I was able to get an appointment pretty quickly and scheduled it for Day 634. Not sure what all this consult would consist of but hey... I'm just here for the ride, let's figure this stuff out.

My doctors were having a chat the morning of Day 630 and I was just waiting for the call. Waiting for them to call and say this is going to be more complicated than we thought. We have to wait another month and do more tests, timing is off, we won't be able to do anything in time.... something. Because the last few months, most of the calls we have received were another roadblock or something else had gone wrong.

My phone rang... it was the Fertility Doctor's office.... my heart fell into my stomach. Hello???

"Hi Julie" said my nurse, "well, what we are going to do is order your meds and get everything ready as if you were starting your transfer cycle with this next menses. We need to get these ordered today and overnight them to you so you have them and are prepared for when your Day 1 starts."

OMG... is this actually happening?! Are we going to get to transfer soon?!

"Call me or the on-call nurse as soon as you start and we will instruct you on what to do with your meds and schedule your cycle start appointment. Let's hope it waits until Tuesday so you can see the specialist first. If all goes well at your specialist appointment, we can start your transfer cycle next week. Now if he for some reason cannot get the protocol in place or ordered in the timeframe that we need it done, we will have to wait until next month to do this. But let's get you ready just incase."

AHHHHHHHH!!!! I was trying not to get too excited because there was still that chance that the doctor on Tuesday would say, ya, we can't do this in that quick of a turn around, you're going to have to wait.

"I have sent your prescriptions for all the medicine to the pharmacy and you need to follow up with them in the next 2 hours to make sure it gets ordered and overnighted to you. The delestrogen that you are ordering, I have never seen insurance cover that before so be prepared to pay for that out of pocket."

You got it boss! We hung up and a huge smile landed on my face. The tone in my voice when I called my husband to tell him and my parents to give them the heads up was so different than the last updates I gave. I was so excited. But still cautious that it might not happen this month. I now wait for my lovely friend to arrive.

I called the pharmacy 2 hours later as instructed and spoke with them about the order. We went over what was on the order and confirmed everything. I told her that my nurse informed me one would probably not be covered and asked the price of it. She said "well, do you want me to at least try processing it with your two insurances." Absolutely!! A few minutes on hold and she was back, "Your insurance covers 1 bottle every 30 days. So instead of $220 a vial, you just need to pay $8. How's that?" Uh, wonderful!!! [I made sure to call my nurse after and let her know that my insurance covered a medicine she had never seen covered before!]

She continued "Unfortunately, the order is for 2 vials and your insurance only covers one. So you would have to pay for the second out of pocket. What I can do is call your doctor and get the protocol and send that to your insurance so they can see that you do need 2 vials and check if they will approve it." Well this was 11 am, and my doctors office closes at 11 a.m.... that was going to be tough. I emailed my nurse to call me back as soon as she could!! After a little wait, she called me back and I told her the situation. She immediately hopped off the phone and called the pharmacy to share the protocol. The pharmacy called me back and told me that based off the dosages for the month indicated in the protocol, one vial would last me for 1 month. I would just have to call back and refill it closer to the end of the month. This was all fantastic news!

...

Well, she came a day earlier than anticipated. Day 632 I called the on-call nurse to let them know I started and she scheduled me first thing Monday morning to come in for my ultrasound and bloodwork and to go over the schedule for the cycle, should my appointment on Tuesday give us the green light. I was supposed to start taking the medicine on Day 2 but with not knowing if we were going to be a go or not, she wanted to check with the Dr. to see what to do. She asked if she could call me back with more information.

Quickly after, she called back and said the Dr. saw my chart that I started and she wants to wait on the meds to see if we get the go ahead on Tuesday before starting anything. Fair enough, let's not waste this stuff if we don't need to.

Day 633 I headed up to Indy for my start cycle appointment. Another meeting with Wanda (ultrasound wand) and some vials of blood drawn - everything looked great and bloodwork came back just as it should! After meeting with my nurse and reviewing the protocol, she sent me on my way. One of the two appointments down. If we get the go ahead, I would start my medicine tomorrow night. Another night at Hotel Bre and a 5 am wake up call, and I was on my way over to Cincinnati for the big appointment.

Want to hear how the appointment went and if we got the green light?? Stay tuned!!

Until Next Time... JR
