The Big Appointments

Writer's picture: Julie R.Julie R.

I feel like every week its two more appointments that we have to pass in order to get to the next step... this week is no different. If these appointments go well, we will be transferring our little embryo next week. What seems like it has been the longest process could possibly be coming to a close. I am so nervous, anxious, concerned, excited, emotional, hopeful, fearful, optimistic, pessimistic... you name it, I felt it.

Day 647 - Up and early to drive to Indy for big appointment #1. I arrived early and again, they were able to get me in a few minutes before my scheduled appointment. It's rare that this happens at doctors offices so I am not mad at all!

Rolled the sleeve up for the standard 2 vial blood draw (which came back with my estrogen high - makes sense because I am shooting estrogen in myself every 4 days, and progesterone levels almost at zero) and then into the ultrasound room to see my good friend Wanda. After a quick ultrasound, the technician said she thought everything looked great. But I needed to get the confirmation from my nurse and review the remaining schedule with her.

Turns out, on the ultrasound they saw a small fluid sac in my uterus. Which is normal considering the time frame of my cycle but they want to keep an eye on it. If it was still there on the day of the transfer, they would want to aspirate it to make sure the embryo doesn't try to implant into it. But everything else looked great! Passed one of the two tests. We reviewed the remaining days of the cycle, when I would start the rest of my medications, and booked my transfer time! Time to spend a night at Hotel Bre, then drive to Cincinnati where I would meet my mom for the night before the desensitization.

Had a nice relaxing night and then did a few hours of work in the morning and I was on my way to Cincinnati. My mom was kind enough to make the drive down to keep me company at the appointment and be there to claim my body if I died - haha Kidding. But seriously, just in case I went into anaphylactic shock or had a bad reaction, she was there to take care of me. What a good momma I have :).

First thing on the agenda was a nap! Like momma like daughter. But after that we had to scope out the menu at Maggiano's and the dinner for 2 option was a winner! We had a nice dinner, dessert, and take home meals and way too much bread. Afterward, we did some laps around the mall to try and burn some calories, but then headed over to our true home: the strip mall with TJMaxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods - a True McPhee shopping experience. Now to attempt to sleep before this big day tomorrow.

Up and at it and ready for Day 649. After a nice little breakfast at the hotel, we were on the way to the doctors office. We arrived a little before my 9:00 appointment but then waited in the lobby for a while. The difference between a fertility doctors office vs any other office is so crazy. By 9:40 we finally got called back to the room. After getting as comfortable as I could on a standard doctors table, with my butt propped up on a pillow, only covered by a few sheets and my blanket from the waist down, we waited for the doctor.

We went over the process before starting. The process of desensitization consisted of 10 different doses of progesterone that would be inserted vaginally every 20-30 minutes. What they are hoping this does is resets my bodies reactions to progesterone. With the frequent doses they want your body say "I just had this and it wasn't too bad, maybe we shouldn't react to it." Then we constantly up the amount so my body can tolerate more and more with the hope I don't break out and will be able to tolerate the 200 mg of Crinone (a form of progesterone) twice a day that I would start tomorrow.

  • Start time: 9:50 a.m.

  • Dose 1 - .1 mg - No reaction, we made sure to take a picture of my face after 10 minutes to see if anything started to react.

  • Dose 2 - .2 mg - No reaction

  • Dose 3 - .5 mg - No reaction

  • Dose 4 - 1 mg - No reaction, okay now my butt is starting to fall asleep.

  • Dose 5 - 2 mg - No reaction, starting to get a full bladder... can't go the bathroom until after this is all done.

  • Dose 6 - 5 mg - No reaction, mom is currently doing steps in place to get her count up for the day... at least I have entertainment during this!

  • Dose 7 - 10 mg - No reaction, okay now my butt is officially asleep. Can I get another pillow?!

  • Dose 8 - 20 mg - No reaction

  • Dose 9 - 50 mg - No reaction, I REALLY need to pee, I feel like my bladder is going to explode.

  • Dose 10 - 20 mg - No reaction, last one... 30 mins until I can pee.

  • End time: 2:30 p.m. - YAY I GET TO PEE!!!

Not sure if this was supposed to happen but with the amount of medicine that was put in my body over the course of the last 4.5 hours, there was a decent amount of medicine that came out. Sorry TMI - but you came to read about the process, so there ya go! The doctor said the body can only absorb so much of the medicine, so there was bound to be some that came out. From what it looks like, this was a successful desensitization. I had no reactions and the doctor said everything went just as planned. As of today, I was in the clear. Now we wait to see if my face breaks out over the next few days as I start my 400 mg of progesterone every day for at least the next 12 weeks.

Day 650-653 I started the progesterone and had no reactions. It actually worked!! Loading up on a few more meds to prepare for the transfer on Day 654. But, in the meantime, the in-laws are in town for the weekend, so time to do some entertaining. This is good timing because it will help pass the time before the big day.

Until next time... JR
